Among early-stage thyroid cancers, removal of the affected lobe of the thyroid might produce similar survival results compared to removal of the entire thyroid. Removal of just a lobe would obviate the need for lifelong thyroid hormone therapy required of those who have their entire thyroid removed. These results were recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Patients diagnosed with thyroid cancers should speak with their physicians about their individual risks and benefits of removal of a lobe of their thyroid compared to their entire thyroid.
